Atherosclerotic Stenosis of Cerebral Arteries
Cerebral artery occlusions of the main vessels may have different causes. If Moyamoya seems not to be the cause, but for example atherosclerosis (carotid stenosis, carotid artery occlusion, MCA stenosis, middle cerebral artery occlusion), careful diagnostics are needed to identify whether an extracranial intracranial bypass (EC-IC bypass) might be indicated or not. In case of severe cerebral infarctions (malignant brain infarction), it is not possible to revascularize, since the brain tissue is infarcted in a large area. However, if only small infarcts or even only TIAs (transient ischemic attacks) have occurred, the option of a bypass must be critically examined. This is especially true for patients who continue to experience symptoms despite of conservative treatment (minimization of risk factors, continuous intake of blood thinners). In contrast to Moyamoya, atherosclerotic stenosis or occlusion of vessels might also be treated successfully by endovascular treatment.
If needed, a surgical therapy might be indicated with comparable standards as in Moyamoya disease, the surgical procedure is comparable. Due to our great expertise in the field of bypass surgery, surgical therapy can be offered safely with all of our experience.
